Attendance

Alsager School is committed to improving pupils’ attendance and punctuality. Pupils should be at school, on time, every day the school is open, unless the reason for the absence is unavoidable.

Celebrating Attendance

We celebrate pupils termly who achieve 100%-98% attendance by awarding an ‘Attendance Star’ as it is testimony to their dedication and to the families who support them.

We also celebrate 100% attendance each month through a certificate awarded by a pupil’s Head of College which is sent home via email. This gives everyone a chance to be regularly recognised for their achievement

Messages to parents are also sent halfway through the month with the aim of encouraging excellent attendance for that month.

In each year group, form classes compete each half term for the best attendance. Their performance feeds into the overall College Cup. This is celebrated and information is displayed around the school.

Procedures

The school applies the following procedures in deciding how to deal with individual absences (more detail can be found in the full version of the Alsager School Attendance Policy found on the Key Policies & Statements page).

Registers – Our school day has two legal sessions. We will take our attendance register at the start of the first session of each school day which counts as our AM registration and register taken at the start of period 4 which counts as our PM registration.

As part of our commitment to safeguarding and our whole school ‘Behaviour for Learning‘ system, the register is taken every lesson by every teacher. Any pupils who are missing from a lesson who have been present in previous lessons are identified by the class teacher and a message is sent to our Attendance Team to investigate.

Punctuality – Pupils should arrive in school before 8.38am each morning. The session starts promptly at 8.40am and pupils are expected to be in their lesson equipped for learning at this time. Punctuality to lessons will also be recorded and monitored.

Holidays – Being absent from the school for any reason can deprive a child of educational opportunities and hamper his/her progress. Children have a right to an education and denying children their rights can have a long-lasting effect on ensuring they meet their true potential.

There is a strong correlation between good attendance and academic achievement.

The Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2006 and the accompanying guidance make it clear that Parents/Carers do not have a legal right to take their child out of school for holidays in term time.

There are 190 statutory school days a year, leaving 175 other days available for holidays that would not have a negative effect on a child’s education. Taking a child on holiday in term time may imply that school is not important.

Leave of absence requests for the following reasons are not considered to be special or exceptional:

  • Availability of cheaper holidays
  • Poor weather experienced in holiday periods
  • Holidays overlapping with beginning or end of term
  • Term time not matching a sibling at another school
  • Visiting relatives

This list is not exhaustive.

Unless there are exceptional circumstances holiday requests will not be approved or authorised. If you choose to take an unauthorised holiday you may be issued by the Local Authority with a Fixed Penalty Notice. Please see our Attendance Policy for more information.
