Monitoring, Assessment & Mentoring

Academic progress is monitored rigorously by the Director and Deputy Directors of Sixth Form, tutors, Curriculum Leaders and teachers. During the first half term, all students will be given individual target grades, against which all work will be assessed. Teachers closely supervise the academic progress of students to provide accurate judgements of a student’s progress, which are used to ensure interventions can be put in place to address any areas of underperformance. Potential interventions include:

  • Tutor mentoring and devising of student action plan
  • Director/Deputy Director/Curriculum Leader monitoring and mentoring
  • Additional subject support
  • Parent/Carer engagement

Assessments:

Students will complete a range of assessments in lessons throughout the year. Report grades will be informed by a range of assessment data, including at least one substantial assessment (during that assessment period) that covers a breadth of topics, preparing students to meet this challenge in their real exams. Please see below a summary of the key dates for sixth form assessments and reports (exact dates will be provided via in year communication):

Key Dates

Year 12 Progression Exams

The progression exams are internal assessments, with A level subject setting exams and applied subject giving an evidence-based assessment of progress. These grades will determine:

  • The starting point for the grade we will provide UCAS with as part of our reference for university applications.
  • Evidence that it is worthwhile for the student to progress into Year 13 on the qualification. Students must achieve an E or Pass grade for this to be determined.

Students not achieving an E or Pass grade:

Students will be given the opportunity to complete a resit of equivalent papers to provide a further opportunity to meet the standard required for progression, with this preceded by a parent/carer meeting to ensure they are approaching the retake in a manner that gives them every opportunity to improve. If the grade does not improve from a U in the second sitting, students and parents will be invited in to talk to the Director or Deputy Director of Sixth Form about alternative options. These could include either re-sitting Year 12 on different courses, selecting an additional one-year qualification for Year 13 (appropriate only for students with two strong passes in other qualifications) or being supported to identify a suitable course or apprenticeship at another Post-16 institution. This is designed to be a supportive process to ensure that all students achieve the best outcomes possible.

Students underperforming:

Students will have further opportunities to complete assessments that allow for them to provide evidence of working at a higher grade. In some subjects these will be retakes of the progression exams. At the point of submitting the UCAS reference teaching staff will review performance in assessments to provide a realistic and positive grade for that subject.

Mock Exams

During periods of mock exams we will ensure students are able to focus fully on their preparation and revision. To achieve this, students will be given support in their timetabled lesson, either to revise for the exam in that subject or prepare for other exams .
