Message from Mrs O’Neill

News from Mrs O'Neill

We are now entering a very busy time in school with the start of the GCSE and A levels exams.  As per my previous messages, please encourage your child to attend the extra revision sessions that are on offer.  Over 130 pupils attended the biology revision session last Thursday after school, which was fantastic, and I know many came out of the exam on Friday feeling that they had made a great start to their exams.  Staff are also putting on sessions on a Saturday.  What a fantastic opportunity to get some additional support; not every school will be doing this. A big thank you to all of our staff for always going the extra mile.

Some of our pupils have been doing lot of work with Mrs Clarke, our pupil voice lead and I am delighted to let you know that we are one of seven finalists for the National Student Voice Awards.  A special congratulations also to Layla in Y13 who is one of seven finalists for the individual secondary awards.  Well done to everyone involved in this.

Can I encourage as many of you as possible to come along to out next ‘Tea, Toast and Talk’ event on Wednesday 22nd May at 8am – 9:15.  It will take place in the LRC and you will have a chance to take a book too.  Members of the pastoral team, SEN department and SLT will be available.  Our pupil voice group are currently reviewing ‘The Alsager Way’; if you have any ideas you’d like to share, come along and have a coffee and a chat with us. Parents of pupils in Y11 or Y13, you may just want to come in and talk to other parents going through the stressful period, too!

We haven’t had an ‘only in Alsager’ moment for a while but I was blown away by some English grammar knowledge during torrential rain at lunchtime.  Trying to encourage a very reluctant bunch to make use of the canopies recently installed by the art rooms, I said they would ‘make Mrs O’Neill very happy’, to which one pupil asked why I was talking about myself ‘in the third person’. Great work Team English!

I have previously mentioned that we have been awarded the Anti Bullying Alliance United Against Bullying Silver Award.  I have attached an advice sheet for parents on how you can support your child if they feel they are being bullied.  A big thank you to Charley in Y8 for all of her work on editing this in collaboration with our anti bullying ambassadors.

SPIRIT week is fast approaching, and all options have now gone out to pupils.  We are only able to put on these days with the financial support of our parents and carers, so I’d like to thank you all in advance for supporting this.  The pupils do love it and it is something they will all have fond memories of when they leave school.  If you are in a position to make additional donations to our school funds, please do use the QR code below.  However, I know times are very tough at the moment.

Despite the heavy focus on exams this term, we still have a range of fantastic enrichment activities on offer which can be seen on our website and social media.  We have recently added a musical theatre club and a dungeons and dragons club – something for everyone.  There has been lots in the news recently about the importance of building up resilience amongst young people and this is something that we also see in school.  Sport provides a great opportunity to do this and also aids physical and mental wellbeing.  Please do encourage your child to get involved in sporting activities, even if it is a power walk around the park or the salt line.

Thanks to all parents for supporting our uniform standards; our pupils do look smart (even if Y11 are pushing the boundaries slightly with the extra ‘good luck’ jewellery!)

I know its trickier at this time of year as they grow out of uniform, but your support in maintaining our high standards is very much appreciated.  If you have any spare uniform that your child no longer needs, please do send it in.

It is a big weekend for Crewe Alex.  Good luck to all of the club. Hopefully there’ll be lots of us there to enjoy a victorious day out at Wembley.  Fingers crossed for some good weather.  Whatever your plans, have a lovely weekend.

“You’re only one workout away from a good mood.” (Maria Marlowe, health coach)
