A reminder that A level results day is on Thursday 13th August. Due to social distancing restrictions we can only allow a certain number of students in at any one time. You have been allocated a time according to your last name. Please see below for the times. You do not need to wear a face covering in school.
The results that you are collecting are ‘calculated grades’. Grades have been based on a range of evidence including mock exams, non-exam assessment, homework assignments and any other record of student performance over the course of study.
Your teachers have worked as a team (faculty, SLT link, data manager) to produce the ‘most likely’ result using the evidence that they had. Headteachers nationally were asked to be judicious and to exercise ‘moral leadership’ in allocation of grades and not take the opportunity to over-inflate outcomes. To avoid school’s over inflating their results, national guidance made it clear that the school’s previous data would be taken into consideration.
I want to reassure you that staff at Alsager School were rigorous in their approach; worked as a team to avoid any potential bias or discrimination and behaved professionally and with integrity.
Schools submitted the centre assessed grades to the exam board and the final outcome for each student, a calculated grade, has been determined by the exam board.
There has been significant press coverage over the past week surrounding A level results, particularly after the students in Scotland received their results. On Thursday 6th August, OfQual, the exams regulator, issued new guidance to schools regarding the appeals process. Individual students are still not able to contest a particular grade, but students can ask their school or college to check whether it made an administrative error when submitting their centre assessment grade or position in the rank order and if it agrees it did, to submit an appeal to the exam board.
Schools and colleges can appeal if they believe something has gone wrong in processing their results – for example, if a centre believes it has made an error when submitting its information; or similarly, that an exam board made a mistake when calculating, assigning or communicating a grade or if they can evidence grades are lower than expected because previous cohorts are not sufficiently representative of this year’s students. However, OfQual expects appeals ‘to be rare’. If a student wishes to access their centre assessed grade they should contact the school in writing within 40 days of receiving their calculated grade. They should use the email address below: subjectaccessrequest@alsagerschool.org. Our staff will not disclose the centre assessed grade verbally or in an email. The calculated grade is the grade that will appear on exam certificates.
We understand that this situation is far from ideal. As I mentioned in previous correspondence, I would urge you to properly reflect on your performance over the past two years to avoid any shocks on results day. I want to reassure you that your teachers worked with integrity and professionalism when agreeing the centre assessed grades. We always want the best for our students but it was important to work within the guidelines of the process so that it was fair. You should view the results that you receive as a stepping stone to the next part of your educational journey. If you do not get the grades that you need to do this, we will provide full support and help you make a decision to suit you. If you are unable to get onto your chosen course and would like to take your exams, you will have an opportunity to take them in the autumn series of exams.
